I note the wording "Grand Lodge." What's the story behind that? Did they establish themselves as a Grand Lodge right of the bat?

@chrmc, No, they were a Lodge (No. 459) from 1784-1827. In 1827, African Lodge No. 459 renounced the charter of England and declared themselves a Grand Lodge. They had, at that point, established the African Lodge of Pennsylvania and Harmony Lodge in Providence RI. So, by the doctrine of Assumption, declared themselves a Grand Lodge. There is actual proof that Harmony Lodge made returns to African Lodge. By 1827, Philadelphia was already a Grand Lodge (1815). In 1827, African Grand Lodge also attempted to warrant Boyer Lodge in New York. Whether Boyer Lodge actually accepted the charter is debatable and the object of present research.

@chrmc here is a roster under the name of African Grand Lodge from 1846.
There is a listing of members who had been initiated since July 9, 1845.
