Junoir warden duties

I just finished my L.I.F.E. program yesterday, and was taught that one of the JW's duties is to plan the calendar for that year. I was curious as to some different ideas to implement in our lodge to get our name into the community better. Any thoughts?

I apologize that this isn't an answer to your question, but it sparked a question for me really quick. Do you have to be a JW or about to be one to be able to do the L.I.F.E program? If not, how would one go about getting part of it?

Brother Stedman,
LIFE is the Lodge Instruction For Effectiveness, a program designed in three parts for those who are "going through the chairs." However, having said that and having gone through the program myself, I can say that it is great information for ANY member of the Fraternity. It will make you a better-informed member, however deep your involvement may become. Your Lodge Secretary should have the means by which you can purchase a copy of the program. Your Lodge may have an Education Officer, who works to teach this and other programs like the Additional Lodge Light, to the brothers.
Some who are going through the chairs to become Master will attend a weekend-long Wardens workshop/conference, which will teach much of what is in the books. I have not gone to one of those, but our Senior Warden did go to one a year ago and said it was very, very informative.
Any brother who wants to learn more about Masonry and the Lodge is the kind of brother we need in Masonry, whether or not he becomes and officer.
Good luck!
Tim

SOme programs to involve the Community might include these:
• Patriotic program for the Fourth of July, with emphasis on Masons such as Paul Revere, Benjamin Franklin, George Washington and others.

• Public Schools Week program. Involve members in going into the schools to read to kids, fix/build a playground or classroom, donate books/educational material to the school library. The history of Texas Masons and Education is deep. You can learn more through some of the history books available from Grand Lodge. Your Lodge may have them on the shelves.

• Texas History program: Sam Houston is a prime example of Masonry's effects on the Texas Revolution. The Grand Lodge website has great info on the men who were Masons involved in the Texas Revolution.

• Community Builder program: The Community Builder award is given by the Lodge to a community member who exemplifies the volunteer, giving spirt of Masonry. It is a community member who is not a Mason.

• Fund raisers for school organizations. Our lodge holds annual fund raisers that give away all the money to a school group that does not have a big Booster club behind it: Arts, Academics, Business, etc.

Hope this helps.

I like projects that combine fund raisers with community service for example we are going to have a brisket plate fundraiser and honor a local fire station and feed the firemen, i would even like to take it a step further and have like a Fireman/Policeman of the year award at some point. This last year we donated two large boxes of toys to the local blue santa program, we put out the boxes in the Lodge in October .

Thanks a lot for that post, Bro. Tim! I was hoping that it was something that a Brother could go through to further his knowledge even if he is not going through the chairs yet. It is my plan to have the privelage of going through all the chairs and even becoming a Master in the near future. I just moved and am in the process of switching to a Lodge in my new area and it has more members, so I don't know how long it would take before I will get to be in a chair. And I am just wanting to continue learning and don't want to have to wait a couple of years before a chair opportunity opens up to me..lol

Since I haven't been able to make contact with my new Lodge Secretary yet, do you happen to know how much it costs to go to the weekend workshop that you mentioned? Or rather a ballpark figure? Again, thanks for the info! I am so glad I found this site with all the useful knowledge the Brothers can provide here :)

Warden's Retreat: I attended last year's retreat as a Senior Warden and really wish that I had done so as a Junior Warden. I found it absolutely invaluable and well worth the money. Just as important as the material is the networking you can do with other lodges. As a matter of fact, it was there that I overheard someone mention MasonsOfTexas.com!

Regarding the original post, our lodge desperately needs an infusion of cash and so I've been on the fundraising committee for the last two years. I don't feel right asking for money without being able to show why the public should support us, so I've tried to combine public service and fundraising in one event. This past December we had a pancake breakfast fundraiser and toy drive. In two weeks we're holding a car show and Gift of Life blood drive. Hopefully both of these events raise the public's awareness of Freemasonry and our lodge in particular.

You looking at going to the one in Odessa or a different one?

I need to go in July or early August. The semester begins in late August and I hate cancelling class if I don't have to. I'd like to go to Waco so I can tour Grand Lodge.

That's my first pick. Waiting to hear if a lodge brother can go so we can split costs. Long way from El Paso to Waco!

Yea, I am hoping to be able to go in July as well and would really like to go to the one in Waco. That is in the middle of where I am now and where I am originally from. Plus, I have wanted to tour the Grand Lodge for years. Keep me/us updated on when you might be going.

No kidding! They need one closer to here but I doubt that will ever happen.

Yea, El Paso is waaaaay out there. That is one long drive coming down I-10...lol I just moved from out there. Have you been to the Scottish Rite Temple there yet?
