It takes a bit of "nerve" to approach a building where you do not know anyone. I encourage you to do exactly that. Find out when the lodge meets, and go to the building about an hour prior to meeting time. You will be pleasantly surprised with what you find.
I became a Mason, for one simple reason. Men that I respected were Freemasons. So I called the lodge, and asked for a petition. I completed it, and submitted it.
Most Masons do not realize that we are own best advertisement. When you put on your lodge ring, and advertise who you are, remember...

You will find that California has a splendid Masonic history. The first pioneers who came into California were Masons. Masons were in the Donner Party, and John C. Fremont, the pathfinder, was a Mason. A.P. Giannini who founded the Bank of Italy (Later the Bank of America) was a Mason.
Be...
Have no fear. Invite your friend to the social events. Have him obtain a petition, and complete it. Things will fall into place, even if you do not sign for him.
Different people deal with these situations differently. I strongly encourage you to check out the "Toastmasters". It is an organization which assists people with public speaking, and "stage fright". There is even a chapter here in Afghanistan.
(BTW- I was born in Louisville, KY)

Interesting responses. I would encourage any Mason, who wishes to visit a lodge in a foreign country, to do your research. You should contact the WM/Secretary or a member of the lodge, and inquire. Get the location, meeting time, and as many specifics as you can. Some foreign lodges, require you...
I add my congratulations. Once you complete the MM degree, you may wish to learn the rituals, and participate as a ritualist. I have done some of the small parts myself, and thoroughly enjoyed the experiences.
There are many Masons who are convinced the the continued loss of membership is not a problem. No problem at all. I could not disagree more. As the number of Masons declines, the number of lodges will also decline (Two lodges that I belonged to in the past, are gone, closed, never to be seen...
More bad news. I cannot understand why so many Masons in the USA (and Canada) are not convinced that there is a problem. And I really do not understand why so many Masons do not wish to discuss solutions.
When I lived in Columbus,OH I joined Aladdin Shrine. There were many different groups (units and clubs) in the Aladdin Shrine. I started the "Voice of Aladdin" for radio hobbyists, so that we could provide communications support for the parades and public events. There are mariner's clubs for...
I am delighted to report, that we have a small Masonic assembly here. Not big enough for a Square and Compasses club. Eggers is closing soon, maybe at my next duty station, we can organize a club, or even a lodge.
Your wife is free to get a tattoo if she likes. I suggest you visit http://www.masonicink.com There is a photo gallery of male masonic "warm art". As far as I can recall ,I have never heard of a woman getting a masonic tattoo, your wife will probably be one of the first. I suggest that she...
I was present, when Richard Dreyfuss took the degrees of our Gentle Craft. I happened to be in WashDC, and found out about the ceremony. I then watched him take the degrees of the Scottish Rite (Southern jurisdiction USA). I consider this one of the highest points of my Masonic Career.
Re: Brother Mel Blanc
One of his first radio jobs, was making the noise of the "Maxwell", the old car that Jack Benny rode in, and Eddie "Rochester" Anderson drove. One interesting factoid: How did Mel Blanc produce the sound of Bugs Bunny munching on carrots? Answer: Mel Blanc chewed carrots...
Not necessarily. The Holy Bible is NOT on the altar of every lodge. And it is not always the only Volume of Sacred Law, that is on the altar. In some countries, the Holy Bible is not on the altar. An alternate volume , such as the Holy Qu'Ran will be there. In Saudi Arabia, the Holy Bible and...
