Happy New Year Brothers. This bottle of scotch recently caught my eye at my neighborhood liquor store. The company, compass box whiskey, is based out of London and their logo is that of something we are familiar with. I am not 100% certain that owners are part of our fraternity, but was wondering if anyone could shed some light. 20190105_185858.jpg

I’d be willing to have you send me a bottle for closer examination.

Very nice bottle. The name may not be related to Freemasonry and may instead refer to the practice used in aviation of filling the compass box on an aircraft with whiskey instead of water to prevent freezing. This was before synthetic liquids replaced it.

When I was in the USAF in the early 90s there was still a labeled location in our bench stock for the whiskey used to refill the compass. And I heard many stories about the difficulty of keeping said whiskey from disappearing.

Learned something new today - thanks brother. You very well could be correct. Take a look at one of their other scotches. Interesting pictures on the bottle. 20190107_190242.jpg 20190107_190610.jpg

That one looks very "esoteric". I looked at some of their other lines and they have some great art on their bottles. As for the whiskey compass story, it may be true or not. I never actually saw one and only have the story from the old timers I served with. It could be right up there with a yard of flightline, a left handed torque wrench, and the keys to the grid square! lol

Don’t let my left-handed torque wrench hear you talk like that!
I may have, on occasion, used a pint of whisky as a level before...
