Entered Apprentice Guide Questions & Essay

Greetings Brethren.

In preparation to receive the 2nd°, I'm completing my Entered Apprentice Candidate's Guide. I considered that by completing an essay on the symbolism of the working tools of this degree, (something readily available with a google search online) I am in effect violating my obligation not to write or print any part of the secrets of the degree whereby they may become unlawfully communicated.

I was told that without completing the essay, I cannot receive the 2nd° for a period of one year.

Is this a test? Should I refuse upon the grounds of not violating my obligation? Is my concern absurd, considering whomever printed these candidate's guides (which are available as an online PDF download to the public) effectively did the same as I would do?

Fraternally,
Entered Apprentice

Ah young Padawn, smart you are. I sure if you ask ten different people you would have ten different answers. As someone new to the Fraternity myself let me see if I can answer this, the secrets are the signs, grips, and the words. The working tools and the symbolisms are important for what they mean or represent too us, but not because they are secrets. You will now hear many people use them in common talk, one would be, mason meet on the square and leave on the plum. Good luck with your studies and remember part of catechism, too trust your brothers.

The working tools are not part of the secrets of the degree. The methods of conferring the degree and the modes of recognition are the secrets of the degree. The symbols are displayed and discussed openly. Don't worry, it's not a trap.

Thank you, Brothers. I'll be passed as a Fellow Craft Mason tonight. I achieved proficiency as an Entered Apprentice in full form within three weeks, (PMC Senior DeMolay) and am scheduled to be raised to Master Mason in the last week of May.
