Coach, what is your source for the word ending -iff meaning "to someone". I am unable to find any etymological reference for this.

Father Hiram

I: Why is the body of Hiram Abiff used to Symbolize Craftsmanship?
R: It is not the physical body that is the focus.

I: What is the focus?
R: What his name and manner represents.

I: What does his name represent?
R: Exactly what Craftsmen Hope to achieve.

I: What is it that Craftsmen Hope to achieve?
R: Mastery.

I: How does the name reflect Mastery?
R: According to the celebrated Maimonides, Abiff denotes the third or highest level of Rabbinical Teachers or instructors.http://www.myfreemasonry.com/#_edn1

I: What was the First class?
R: The First class was noted for having no title.

I: What was the Second class?
R: The Second class was noted for being called, “Rabbanim.”

I: What was the Third or highest class?
R: The Third or highest level was noted for being called, “Rabbi.”

I: What did such men also receive?
R: They also received the cognomen “Abba” or “Father.”

I: Does this “Father” denote a man who sires genetic offspring?
R: No. It denotes a Father who sires learned students where genealogy is not a consideration or of any consequence.

I: What then does the word “Abiff” denote?
R: It denotes the Third or highest class of Teacher or Instructor.

I: What’s more?
R: Because of the formation of the word, it further denotes “someone’s” Instructor.

I: How so?
R: The word “Abi” means “father.” The word “abif” [1]means “my father”, which signifies acceptance of another as his Teacher, Instructor or Benefactor.

I: What does this Allude to for Master Masons?
R: A Grasp and skill level of a Recognized Teacher, Instructor or Benefactor.

I: What other Hebrew word denotes “my Teacher?”
R: Rabboni

Mackey says right in that entry that the correct translation of Abif is as a surname, not as "my father". The possessive pronoun for my father in biblical hebrew should be abi (avi).

"The Freemasons are therefore perfectly correct in refusing to adopt the translation of the English version, and in preserving, after the example of Luther, the word Abif as an appellative, surname, or title of honor and distinction bestowed upon the relief builder of the Temple, as Dr. James Anderson suggests in his note on the subject in the first edition (1723) of the Constitutions of the Freemasons."

Thanks for the info., Coach!
Couple questions.
1. Am I right, if I say that: "Jewish People have 'Huge Influence' on Freemasonry?"
2. Isn't there a contradiction between -- Masonry & Christianity -- cause Christ said that: "There is only 1 Teacher/Master(Him); and you're all -- Brothers?"
Thank You!!!

I had heard of this before and was curious about it, so I did some digging and thought I'd share. Obviously, as with just about anything, you've got people who disagree about whether it was a surname or a title and whether or not it even sounds like Abiff. In my opinion, that's for everyone to decide for themselves. The main passage that Mackey points to is 2 Chronicles 4:16.

English (obviously, there are various translations): The pots also, and the shovels, and the flesh-hooks, and all the vessels thereof, did Huram his father make for king Solomon for the house of YHVH of bright brass.

Hebrew: וְאֶת־הַסִּירוֹת וְאֶת־הַיָּעִים וְאֶת־הַמִּזְלָגוֹת וְאֶת־כָּל־כְּלֵיהֶם עָשָׂה חוּרָם אָבִיו לַמֶּלֶךְ שְׁלֹמֹה לְבֵית יְהוָה נְחֹשֶׁת מָרוּק׃

Transliterated Hebrew: Ve'et-hassirot ve'et-haya'im ve'et-hammizlagot ve'et-kol-keleihem asah churam aviv lammelech shelomoh leveit hashem nechoshet maruk.

Obviously, the formatting is mine to draw attention to the portion we're interested in. Keep in mind that the ch at the beginning of the name is similar to the one at the beginning of Chanukah, and which can also be pronounced as an h.

Since it's all allegory, choosing surname or title to grasp Abiff's significance shall cause you to chase one rabbit or another.

Has anyone ever noticed this - it always makes me smile :)
I use Tapatalk for my forum posts when I'm not at home and it adds the default tag line that your posts came from such and such type of android phone. If you go into your settings you can change that tagline to whatever you want. And, since I am a huge nerd (and a member of the 501st Legion) It was an easy decision about what to change it to! Thanks for noticing. :)

Now back to your regularly scheduled discussion.
