Couldn't a candidate just be a single (unmarried) male? We have inititiated several single fellows in the past few months. I have no idea what their sexual orientation is based on the petition. But I will give you this, if you put married, I would have to assume that you are straight.

Like others have said, I think it literally means, "So may it be" or "Let it be so". The same as "Amen". But practically, it is a statement of agreement. When we say "Amen" or "So mote it be" in response to another we are stating our agreement with what they have said.
