I think that's Elixer's point - just be cause we have taken a first, second or third degree obligation (or even in some places oath), because we have taken them under different Jurisdictions and Workings, does not mean those obligations are the same. Indeed it is obvious they are not (putting aside I have read many of them from different times and places - you can see it here when Freemasons talk on the web. Not even our Working Tools are the same in each degree).
But also, as I gained more experience in Freemasonry, I realised we work and act based on three things and not just the first of the below;
1 Rule (Both within your Constitutions/Rule Book and what is within the specific Ritual).
2 Precedent.
3 Local Culture (and that might even go down to the specific lodge, but more generally is the Grand Lodge).
These three things rely and also change on two others - time and place. For instance, once, talking about anything which happened in a Lodge here in Victoria would be frowned upon, however, at this time, we will talk very openly about it. That has progressively been changing since the 1990's...
