I'm not a mason but often wonder when I read up about it, and thinking about my own personality about one thing:

Do Innovators, Entrepreneurs and like minded "Square peg in round holes" people who become masons ever become frustrated or somehow boxed in by the definite rules, structures, "boundaries" that is set by Freemasonry?

The boundaries the Order puts on its members is more to ensure that things are done properly. For example, Anyone can start a lodge on the Internet, but obviously there is no legitimate history or lineage. Masons are free to pursue any endeavor they wish, however of they do something that goes against their obligations, constitution and by laws, or the laws of the land in which they reside, they may lose their membership. The rules and laws within a masonic jurisdiction are to ensure proper work is being done.

This is all about what it means when we say to keep our passions and so on. It's a statement about focus.

Dreams are creative without the bounds of physical reality. Inventions are creativity within the bounds of both physical reality and the current state of art in technology. To an inventor his invention should be his passion.

There have been many notable Inventors and men of the arts that were Masons. To name just a few Brothers, there was: Benjamin Franklin (scientist/ writer/ entrepreneur/ politician), Buzz Aldrin, Jim Irwin, John Glenn (American astronauts/ pilot/ scientist), Wolfgang Mozart (musician/ composer), John Molson (founder of Molson Brewery corp.), Sir William S Gilbert (English poet and play write, partner of Sir Arthur Sullivan.), King C. Gillette ( American manufacturer and inventor of the safety razor.), Irving Berlin (American songwriter and composer), Sir Alexander Flemming (discovered penicillin, thus leading to the new pharmaceutical industry.).

S. African famous Masons:
Anton Anreith (sculptor and art teacher.), John Chisholm (civil engineer), Ernest Charles Chubb ( ornithologist, natural historian and museums pioneer), Charles Edwardes Lewis (a classical scholar and educationist.).

Let me leave you with a parting thought...

After each Brother has been made a Master Mason in my Lodge, I ask them if they have any regrets? Without exception the answer given is, they wished they hadn't waited so long to join the Brotherhood. Which goes for yours truly, I wished I hadn't waited until I was 42 before finally making the choice that would give me much needed spiritual direction in my life.
