I have another question for all of you dealing with Masonic Law. I was just asked this question by phone, and thought it would be good for this discussion The question is: Is it unlawful to ask or answer ritualistic questions over the telephone?
Let me know what you think.

No, those are private conversations and if you are not sure who you are talking to then good thing he called to be tried!! :)

I don't think that much of the law has been updated since the invention of the telephone, so who knows...:p

I am of the opinion that it is not illegal, so long as you are certain that the voice on the other end of the line is known to you. I have searched the Constitution and have not found a reference to it.
On another note, I am curious. Brother Sonny, where do you find it to be stated that where the law is silent on a matter or subject, that the matter or subject is permitted? I am not saying that I disagree with you, but I have heard rumors that the Juresprudence committe is split on this issue.

A split does exist on this issue. However it does adhere to Masonic tradition. I don't believe it exactly stated as such in the law but niether does it say 'except for what is expressly allowed by law everything else is prohibited.'

I would say that it is legal, as long as you know the person on the other end is qualified and are completely sure that no unqualified person (eavesdropper or cowan) is listening.

So, if you are 100% of his voice, have checked both phones for bugs and, if on a cell, are certain no one can hear you, you are good to go.:D Surely the conspiracy theorists aren't our tapping lines to verify what they see in Duncans!:D

Sorry, I just wanted to lighten up the discussion. I'm sure there are those out there who would feel that talking over esoteric stuff by phone is bad practice, but as I was learning my work there were several times that I called to verify I was right on a line. Still to this day I call him if I am unsure of a line in a degree.

It is mouth to ear (in a sense).

I have been instrucrted by a DI on the phone before and this man is a by the booker and he would do nothing fully legal as an eagle so no worries I am sure this is legal.

I agree, I know of a few brothers that did most of their instruction via the phone. Ive always worried about cowards and name droppers
