Single Malt Scotch Drinkers?

Been a while since I posted, and saw the recent replies. Since we last all spoke, I tried the Laphroaig for a party and darn if I am not now hooked on the Islay peat. So, for those more refined than I, welcome!

Brother Fiat, I've had Talisker. Now to me, it was a bit more bitey(?) than Laphroaig, but no where near as over powering (to me) as Arbeg. I fear my palate is not yet at that point. But, when I open the Laphroaig and that smokey aroma creeps out of the bottle, that does the trick.

Brother BodhiD, interesting blended, I might grab a bottle for my shelf. My grandfather was a JW Red kind of guy (and a Freemason), I grew up on the aroma. Not surprised I ended up here. Greetings from Celina #241

Brother Lars,

Yes I agree, that Talisker is a little milder than laphroaig, and Lagavulin being another of my favourites. You may enjoy a Caol Ila too, also from Islay

Just back from a trip to Scotland. We've spent three days on Islay. We've visited all distilleries, but did tours only at Kilchoman and Laphroaig. On the boat back we've bought some travel retail bottles (for some € 250,- ...), including a Bunahabhain which I was not too fond of before we visited them :)

Yes! My tastes progressed from Laphroaig to Talisker to Caol Ila, which I feel tastes like a combination of the former two: peaty & spicy.
I DO have a bottle of the Talisker Distiller's Edition, but like most of my beauties, it sits waiting for that special occasion that never seems to come. . . :(
And, of course, I've had my 1 sq. ft. of eternally leased land at the Laphroaig distillery for 10 or 15 years. Would like to visit it some day!

Did anyone else see what I saw in the image on the bottle?
Yes, I noticed that right away, which is appropriate for me at present (assuming we are speaking of the same thing we discerned). I thought it was a tad odd given the name "Old Masters," but I still love the idea.

Ahh Talisker Distillers edition is my favourite from them. And just remember, a good malt is there to be drank and enjoyed, it hasn't aged in casks for all these years to just sit there and look at. Get it cracked open and enjoy it.

I'm a fan of the Benromach organic a beautiful speyside single malt. Made better by the fact I could walk to the distillery and taxi back

I'm sure you all heard about the Grand Lodge of Scotland whisky? It sounds more interesting than Old Masters. JWRL is about the only whisky that I decline. The GLoS whisky is an Arran, which is not my favourite, but at least a single malt and not bad.

Roy_ thank you for the info on that GLoS. I had not heard of this. I'd definitely like to at least try the GLoS Scotch, perhaps put a bottle on the shelf. I eventually tried the Old Masters, it was eh, but nothing spectacular.

I love Scotch. I am not a snob and will drink a blend like Chivas and JW (platinum is prob my fav, best value is the Green which they've brought back, but I've not tasted the current version. Double black is okay, but once had a JW black at 43% proof, its normally 40%, which was amazing, but it came from a duty free shop in India and I've never seen it again.)

We've done well on the Christmas haul. There is a Melbourne Scotch called Starward.... its awesome value..... Australia only makes 2 decent scotches where the price is reflected in the value: Starward and Bakery Hill. People rave about Tasmanian Scotch (Lark and Sullivan's Cove especially), but never had one i thought was good value... In the Christmas Haul we have one of the two Starwards. We've tried the wine barrel finish which was good. The heat in Australia, and the fact they realy cook their grain to the edge gives the Starward a character moving towards bourbon.... while clearly remaining a scotch. Australia's heat, esp in the Southern mainland with temprature fluctations, ages scotch twice as fast as in Scotland ..)

We just cracked open Basil Hayden bourbon. She loves the wine barrel finish Starward, so I thought I'd buy her the Basil..... The Basil is goood, but at $70 AUD while it's good she's tasted it, it will be a one off I think.

I got her a Quarter cask Laphroaig.... its 48% and i love it but we've not opened it yet. I also got at 12 YO Coal Ila.... it's been hard to find in the last 12 months and one of my fav.... but as someone mentioned above, if your on a budget, the Ardberg is great buying.... but the Coal Ila was a gift from a Bro who shares my love for the Water of Life :)

@ Bloke. I no longer partake, so I'll ask that you enjoy one taste of Caol Ila for me. It is the best of the Islays, and probably my favourite single malt.

I will lift a glass for you Bro..... when I open it..... i've always thought scotch changes when opened and at a certain point.... i did some research on it recently; once a bottle becomes (generally) about half empty, the air in the bottle oxidizes the scotch changing its character. Traditionally, I used to have many (3-4) bottles open at once, but I had a lovely bottle of Glenmorangie (nectar d'or) spoil because I was saving the last bit to share with a particular friend.... I/we tend to only open a couple of bottles at once now..... and i ain't taking any chances with me Coal Ila !!! Might even wait for winter to open it, sweltering summer here atm and I'll generally take 4-8 weeks to drink the bottle (if I can resist... drank one in 3 days once, but sharing it is part of the joy of having it) .... but whenever the great event happens.... i will lift a glass for, and to, you.. and you've picked a good time not to partake , Coal Ila is becoming harder to find and more expensive...and like you, it's my fav
