    Greetings from Alexandria VA

I Am not "new" here. I have been off the board, because I have been occupied. (I do a lot of international work). I plan to be more active. I am going to be more active in Freemasonry in my local lodge as well. Nice to be back.

Do lodges REALLY need to have their own building?

Here in WashDC metro area, you see 5-6 lodges occupying the same building. I visited Phoenix Lodge #17, in Moscow, Russia. They are just getting underway, so they meet in a conference room in a hotel. It will be some years, before they can afford a building of their own.

    Petition Submitted!

Permit me to add my congratulations. It was one of my ham radio friends, the late Don Tuggle N4AOC, who originally introduced me to Freemasonry. You will meet many hams who are Masons. When I lived in Columbus OH (1990), we had enough Masonic ham operators to form our own degree team. The...

    Side (Fun) Degrees

I don't know if it qualifies as a side degree, but the "Rusty Nail" degree, is somewhat fun. Some lodges invite members who have not participated in meetings for some time, and are "rusty", are invited to the lodge. A ceremony is performed to help rusty Masons brush up on their knowledge.

    Membership looking up!

I congratulate you. I have been concerned with the decline in membership for several years. Particularly so, because two lodges that I belonged to in the past, have closed and consolidated. I pray that Grand Lodges and lodges will see this problem, and act accordingly. Every little increase...

A Masonic "Bill of Rights". Is it needed? Is it possible?

Re: A Masonic "Bill of Rights". Is it needed? Is i Drafting a "model" bill of rights, would not be a difficult task. Just go back about 5-10 years, and examine all of the abuses and usurpations which grand Lodges and Grand Masters have perpetrated. Getting such a bill of rights adopted, would...

A Masonic "Bill of Rights". Is it needed? Is it possible?

Re: A Masonic "Bill of Rights". Is it needed? Is i The situation in Arkansas is indeed an embarrassment. If some USA Grand Lodges would withdraw fraternal relations, and the Mother Grand Lodge in England would withdraw, maybe some changes would occur.

    Master Mason Ring

Normally, you should not wear any Masonic "bling" until you are raised to MM. Ask your lodge secretary, for the policy in your state of residence. There are many excellent used masonic rings for sale on ebay (and other places). You should also check the pawn shops in your area, you can often...

A Masonic "Bill of Rights". Is it needed? Is it possible?

Re: A Masonic "Bill of Rights". Is it needed? Is i bump. I am fascinated with your opinions. Do you think Grand Lodges should adopt a bill of rights?

Should Grand Lodge be in the Public Eye More?

Grand Lodges can and should get publicity. I am 1000% for this. I am reminded of the old story about the Hollywood starlet. She was asked by a reporter from a major news outlet, what she thought about all the bizarre and weird stories printed about her in the supermarket tabloids. She responded...

Should Grand Lodges mandate that all subordinate lodges have a website?

Re: Should Grand Lodges mandate that all subordina The area you describe is all concrete now! I worked for a firm on International Blvd. in McLean. You just about have to go to Leesburg, to see anything green now!

Should Grand Lodges mandate that all subordinate lodges have a website?

Re: Should Grand Lodges mandate that all subordina My Kentucky lodge has no computer nor printer in the lodge building. The telephone has an answering machine, but the record function is turned off. If you call, you will get a message stating the meeting times, and the system hangs up. We...

Why do people leave/ become inactive?

I am delighted to have been of help. The enthusiasm of most Masons, to accept or even consider my "advice", has been somewhat "uneven". Your posting "made my day"

Should Grand Lodges mandate that all subordinate lodges have a website?

Re: Should Grand Lodges mandate that all subordina Here is one, Columbia lodge 285, Arlington VA (suburban Washington DC) Here is the website: http://www.columbia285.org/ ----------------------------------------- I visit this lodge frequently. For some years, this lodge has gotten many new...

Should Grand Lodges mandate that all subordinate lodges have a website?

Re: Should Grand Lodges mandate that all subordina The "effectiveness" of a lodge website, varies all over the map. Some lodges get 70% or more of their new petitioners, from internet inquiries. Some lodges get very few inquiries from the 'net. I guess it depends on a variety of factors: the...

Why do people leave/ become inactive?

This is an interesting comment, that I hear often. "My lodge is not interested in X" or "My lodge has never done Y". If there is some activity that will benefit your lodge, and the members, then propose it. You may find that there are members in your lodge, who are also interested in the...

Why do people leave/ become inactive?

Many excellent points raised here. I have often discussed, that Masonry needs to take a "holistic" approach, about how to move Masonry (and Masons) into the 21st century. We need to find out what causes men to become inactive and drop out, and also what makes them keep coming back, and...

Why do people leave/ become inactive?

Thumbs up! This is why I have always been so supportive of "Square and Compasses" clubs, and informal Saturday morning breakfast meetings. You can learn so much more about the Craft, when you are out of the formal meetings.
