I just finished The Craft by John Dickie. This has been one of the most enjoyable Masonic books I have read recently. I cannot recommend it enough. Dickie takes a very informative deep dive into Masonic history, warts and all, in several of the areas around the world where Freemasons have...
No kidding, lack of information is a serious understatement. And what there is raises my hackles. The number of red flags in this statement alone is ridiculous.

Nice picture. Not Freemasonry. Pretending that the Craft is any older than the late Middle Ages/Early Renaissance at the very earliest is wishful thinking at the best and cannot be supported no matter how much you want it to be true. The fact that our Order has adopted symbols used by earlier...
Ah. That makes sense. There has been a dramatic uptick in making everything relate to environmental issues since then. I still stand by my Waterworld theory though. :D

Since we do not have any claim that a Freemason came down from a mountain carrying a mandate from the Great Architect to create our organization I think we can safely conclude that Freemasonry is a human institution. With religious foundations and ideals to be sure. Do you have some evidence...
Freemasonry absolutely has always included the social aspect as part of the Craft. You would be correct in saying that Freemasonry is not, or should not be, only a social club.

I have still yet to hear a solid argument as to how Brothers having a glass of brandy together after Lodge ruins that. What is it about the addition of alcoholic beverages to a Masonic gathering that makes it unacceptable? And the fact that your position is that of you don't get things your way...
You are absolutely correct. That's why i used the qualifier "seem". If you are going to state that a Lodge does not need a bar but not provide a justification ornreason for your stance then I am left to conjecture. Which I have done.
Edited for spelling.

Well, I wholeheartedly agree that installing a bar against the regulations of that jurisdiction is absolutley unacceptable and should be dealt with. I imagine it must have been reported to the GL which makes me wonder why they have not come down on that Lodge like a ten ton hammer. I know my GL...
Well, to be fair, you started the discussion on bars in Lodges and it really is a hot button topic whenever it comes up here and in other discussion areas. And, as stated, we are not talking about breaking the rules. If a GL says no bars on premises, of course don't put a bar in the Lodge. That...
Still not sure how you are relating some of these issues. How exactly does a Lodge that has a social aspect for the members contribute to a decline in membership? Practicing Freemasonry and being social are not mutually exclusive.
And many of us do not see the shrinking membership of Masonry as...
Nobody is suggesting the Lodge ignore the rules. The argument is that the rule against having a bar in the Lodge makes no sense. Your statement made it seem like if your Lodge added a bar (legally according to your jurisdiction) it would cause you to quit attending.

As would absolutely be your choice. But you seem to be laboring under the same image of any location that serves intoxicating beverages as a place of drunken debauchery and unMasonic behavior. But the fact is that the evidence fully disproves this theory as countless Lodges have a bar on...
Building the bar to attract members sounds like a Shriner thing to do! But having a bar in the building for Brothers to congregate at before and after th e meeting doesn't mean unMasonic. The US is actually considered odd that most Lodges here don't have them. And even that is changing in...
I went through the KT degrees 20 years ago. While the degrees are beautiful and enriching, I don't know that they really add anything to the Hiramic legend from what I recall of them, being overtly Christian in nature and dealing more with those themes. The same with the Cryptic degrees, which...
Wow. This thread has been going for almost 8 years. That was some bit of reading to catch up! Grumble grumble necro something grumble. lol
I've never been shy about my view that the Shrine should drop it's MM requirement. They do great work with their hospitals and while I've never been a...
Absolutely, Brother! Here are my 1st Century Romans I just finished for DBA. I'm currently working on an Ancient Briton army and a Jewish Revolt Army so they have some opponents.
