Out of state membership records requests

Anybody have an idea what is the norm for requesting membership records (deceased) from an out-of-state grand jurisdiction? Texas has a dedicated genealogy request section of its site, but for other states what is the etiquette? Can I contact the Grand Sec and/or staff directly or is it better to go through my Lodge Sec and/or Grand Sec in order to contact the other jurisdictions Grand Sec office? I've got a friend whose family were members in a couple other states, but not sure how to go about requesting the records for him.

Check the other GL's website first; some have genealogy assistance links. If there isn't anything on the site, I'd (personally) go up the chain through the Sec/GrandSec.

I contacted the Grand Lodge of Illinois directly through their email link on their web site, and requested information on my grandfather's masonic record. They scanned it and emailed it back to me in just a couple of days.

For Illinois they will send record summaries to non-Masons as long as requester is a family member and the brother is deceased. It is likely many jurisdictions offer similar service with the detailed requirements varying jurisdiction to jurisdiction.

When I bought my ring from my ex-wife, I sent an e-mail to the NC lodge her grandfather was a member of. They sent me a scan of his info card with degree dates, birth and death, etc.
