If Masonry has no genuine secrets, what do ODCs matter?

Some of our secrets are the type we can shout from the roof and they still remain secret. We treat each other as kin in one big bickering family. There is no how we just do it by experiencing it.

It is the opinion of some that brothers of these classes do not learn this type of secret. And yet, just as you point out, much the same happened back then.
