I always laugh when I think that we have a huge Navy base .... outside MEMPHIS!

People tend to forget about the Navy's rather large flying machine. Nearly every airdale went to "A" school outside Memphis. A few of us had to go to the Pine Barrens Riviera in New Jersey.

When I got out of A School, one of the duty choices was to work with NORAD. I said I didn't join the Navy to be stationed under ground in Colorado.
I knew crypto guys who had spent their entire career and never set foot on a ship. Most of them were stationed on land somewhere near the border of Eastern Europe.

Former SSGT of Marines, 77-85. My father was a WW2 Tin Can and Patrol Craft sailor. Had a damn heart attack when I told him I joined the Corps. I was a ANGLICO Marine and spent a lot of time at sea. USS Guam especially. I also had the privilege of calling in 200 rounds from the New Jersey in Beirut. Most beautiful thing I ever saw. Bandits didn't bother us for a while after that.

A bunch were on Diego Garcia, too.

We had a guy rotating to shore duty who asked to be stationed on Diego Garcia. When he asked what was available, the detailer said something along the lines of he didn't know because no one had ever purposely asked to go there.

Sounds like a dream not to go to the ship. My 2 year tour was 2 years to many. Of course my tour was unaccompanied and with the FDNF carrier so maybe my experience was tainted.
