As some of you know, I recently attended Lodge in New Mexico. After visiting with the Brethren I was informed the only proficiency requirement is memorizing the obligations. If we adopted this, would it help our numbers or water down Masonry?

It's not that I had to do it, I just think that if I can sit, learn the questions and answers, give the work in Lodge, and teach others, it really can't be that hard. I will be 58 in a few months, and was raised just over a year ago. My memory may be better than others, but when you consider my head injury, the PTSD, and age, I really can't find anything else that would make it too hard to get through. My Instructor was pleased in my asking questions on the work for the meanings, or my being able to recognize these meanings as we worked. Yep, I'm really patting myself on the back, but I really don't think it was all that hard to learn and turn in the work. It was a LONG way off in those first sections, but after that was done, it wasn't that bad. I am still excited about Masonry, and want to learn and do more. I will as it, and time comes to me. Had I known what I know now, I would have done all of this some 25 years or more ago. Oh, but those obligations can be a stumper at times still...
Gotta learn the keys for those obligations, but to answer Blakes question heck no we need to add more to the memory work not take it away. The memory work is so valuable to us as humans on so many levels we need more but I am only in Blue Lodge now so I bet when I go up I will have more than I could handle. You may think it is funny and a shame but I swear I misplace things way less when I am constanly practicing memory work.
I am with Rhit I believe that there is more needed than jsut memory work. Lets dig into the tool box and learn how to use our EA tools and what is really taught in the EA. Read a few papers by Lightfoot and others. See if we can't be better people. They gave us a year what is the rush to become a FC or MM?

Let us look at my Grand Lodge the Gran Logia de Costa Rica:
1. When you apply, you provide a color picture of yourself, curriculum vitae, a written Police Report, and a written credit report.
2. The GL then make up a notice containing your picture etc, which is then placed in every Lodge Building in the Country for ONE YEAR.
3. If this form is taken down and given to the Master of a Lodge with an explanation, the process stops.
4. If the form is not removed an investigation committee is formed.
5. This committee will take up to a year.
Therefore the time from when you apply to when you get your EA is 2 years. There is at least a year between degrees.
