Wearing a sport coat and apron?

When wearing a sport coat or suit jacket in lodge, do you wear the apron over the coat? Or under with the coat with the coat unbuttoned?

At our installation this past summer, I had a brother tell me that the must be worn outside. Then when we got in, the PM who was doing the installation had on a blazer with the apron under. I have seen photos wear both styles were exhibited. In fact, in an installation photo including my grandfather back in the 60s or 70s, there were guys doing it both ways.

I actually prefer to wear it under with the coat unbuttoned. For me it is more comfortable, because of a sizeable spare tire I have acquired over the years. Of course, the coat is open and the apron is visible. Last time I wore it like this in the lodge, I got some strange looks from some of the brothers.

What say you? Is there any official decree or is this left up to the individuals discretion?

Back to the real Topic now:

I was told that the apron must be worn over your coat. I do not know where this came from but it was one of the etiquette's I was informed of shortly after becoming a mason.

It is one of our more sacred symbols and would be kinda pointless to put them on only to cover some of it with a jacket. JMHO

I will have to agree, the apron is very symbolic and I personally would not cover it up. That being said, I'm also not going to judge or ridicule another brother for wearing it under and unbuttoned.

Although Masonic protocol dictates that the apron be worn over a buttoned jacket/coat, that only looks good on the skinny Brethren. Us "physically fit" types are a different story.

Fortunately or Unfortunately (depending on your point of view) I have the benefit of having the District Instructors from Masonic Districts 14-G & 14-H as members and participants at my home Lodge. Soon we will also be home to a District Deputy....

Anyhow, my point is this: Beyond a shadow of doubt Aprons are to be worn OVER whatever clothing you wear including suit coats. Officers, this is also true for your Jewels. Collars, Chains, & Jewels must not be allowed to "escape" under the cover of your clothing.


And YES round is a shape, so is Pear. I are one. :wink:
