Why Go To Church?

A Church goer wrote a letter to the editor of a newspaper and complained that it made no sense to go to church every Sunday. "I've gone for 30 years now," he wrote, "and in that time I have heard something like = 203,000 sermons. But for the life of me, I can't remember a single one of them.
So, I think I'm wasting my time and the pastors are wasting theirs by giving sermons at all."
This started a real controversy in the "Letters to the Editor" column, much to the delight of the editor. It went on for weeks until someone wrote this clincher:

"I've been married for 30 years now. In that time my wife has cooked some 32,000 meals. But, for the life of me, I cannot recall the entire menu for a single one of those meals. But I do know this. They all nourished me and gave me the strength I needed to do my work. If my wife had not given me these meals, I would be physically dead today. Likewise, if I had not gone to church for nourishment, I would be spiritually dead today!" When you are DOWN to nothing.... God is UP to something! Faith sees the invisible, believes the incredible and receives the impossible! Thank God for our physical AND our spiritual nourishment!

When Satan is knocking at your door, simply say, "Jesus, could you get that for me?

A great post, Brother Jerry!
I believe this to be true because we may not always remember the sermon, but the actions of a good man are based upon something. If a person is in any particular element in life for an extended period, he or she begins to take on the traits of the element and before long it becomes a lifestyle. I had the sunday sermons forced upon me as a child and pre-teen to the point that I did not want to hear it and rebelled against most association with the church.

I ran, (with the proverbial scissors), if you will, with others that felt as I did and turned basically towards "The Darkside". After a while a friend was caught doing something and was sent to a juvenile detention center, (Reform School), as we called it. As we became older one or two did jail time for minor things and even later a couple of guys served prison sentences for crimes committed. I always watched this happening to acquaintences around me and I finally figured...Snap*, If I don't change my ways, beginning with my acquaintances that I thought were my friends, I could be where they are! It is sometimes hard to change your life and in some cases takes a life altering experience to open our eyes to needed change, but I really think that deep down perhaps some of those sermons reached a part of me unconsciously and took root in my heart. It wasn't until I had become an adult that I learned of my maternal grandfather's being a Mason and my grandmother an Eastern Star. My grandfather died in his early 40s with the "Black Lung", from working in the coal mines in Alabama. My grandmother could not afford to keep the family together and my mother and four siblings were split up to live with relatives and in an childrens home. The children's home, I learned later was, The Masonic Home for Children in Alabama. It was at that point in my life that I realized an importance in my own spirituality and knew that I had a real obligation to Freemasonry. By following the "Golden Rule" and good, upright standards, I coult feel a rush of blessings being bestowed upon me. I learned that It is so much easier to be kind and giving to others that trying to gain by beating someone else was just hard to do and was always disappointing to me. Sermons, (wholesome teachings), are a good thing wherever you find them, and Masonry will take that good man and make him better. I feel that Freemasonry has played an important role in my life and I am only richer for the experience. Masonry has given me new hope for all mankind and humanity.
The blessiings flowing over me are overwhelming!
It sort of feels like a fresh mountain stream flowing over your body on a beautiful sunny day... You just can't stop it, and why on earth would you want to. Always hold on to your faith!
Thank you Brethren, one and all!
Blessings to all,

Ah! You can, if you only have the faith.

you can, figuratively.

none of the challenges faced on a daily basis are as easily dismissed as "get the door"

i would see my laziness in the morning (having a hard time getting up) as sloth, but jesus always gets mad when i ask him to hit the snooze button (or in my confusion, ask him to get the door).

well, maybe after 30 years of study, it's easy, but i've never really seen faith as something easy. constant study, meditation, getting up for church on sundays - not really things that come easily to me.
