Well, Companion, I'm in chapter but I'm not military. We've got some vets in Blue Lodge but we're not all vets (I have never been in the military). I suspect while we are all Brothers, we might have different feelings.
I belong to Chapter and am also Scottish Rite. I am also a Christian of the Episcopalian variety. What I object to when it comes to Commandery is the military aspect. I prefer to keep my Freemasonary and my Christianity separate.
When my dad raised me he gave me a ring. Our lodge has baseball caps with the square and compasses on them and he name of our lodge.I have a Scottish Rite eagle on my car, as am a Scottish Rite Mason.

I have been an officer of my lodge for going on three years I guess now. Unless there is anything that prevents me from attending, I show up for Masonic Funerals and the church or secular funerals for Brothers. I've been to several as an officer, in full regalia.
Good luck with other Brothers' suggestions: my father gave me the Masonic ring I have.I know not everyone comes from a family of Masons, but I wouldn't know but good luck.
