Petticoat Masons

has anyone ever heard the term Petticoat Masons used towards MMs who have joined the OES? I heard it a lot in Oregon but when I mentioned it here in NM no one knew what I was talking about.

Sounds a bit derogatory, since the OES is an appendant body and allows both men and related females to join. They have a beautiful old mansion for an HQ in DC, so maybe the misogyny is more jealousy than anything else.

its wasn't used towards the women of the OES but the men that join, I even heard the MMs in the OES use it in reference to themselves..."youre in oes?" "yup im a petticoat mason."

I've heard it but do not like it because it does not create a favourable impression. Likewise is OES standing for Order of the Eating Sisters. We should try to kill off "clever" references like that and treat all with respect

So its an international term huh? that's interesting. as for your OES joke, that's kinda funny. Sorry Im a soldier and the most inappropriate things are hilarious to me, like your mom jokes.

As for not creating favorable impressions, they are just terms used amongst masons, I would never refer to a brother as a petticoat mason to a non initiated, or refer to a brother as such if I didn't know him on a personal level and knew he knew I was just joking.

Yet, in using it, and a MM who hears it and is thinking about joining, it might put him off.

But I do understand where you are coming from... I'm just in front of the public so much as a Freemason and am careful of these things. Maybe I'm hyper sensitive, but I've also been a salesperson and see a deal die because of saying the smallest wrong thing...

Hey Bloke, where does your GL stand on OES? I know UGLE doesn't recognize them, but haven't researched other foreign GLs.

It's more than UGLE simply not recognizing them. They consider them to be co-Masonry and clandestine.

Wow. I didnt know that. I wonder how OES found its way here.,. I've never had any interest in it, but will ask around. I know i'm very naughty, but when women ask about the gender devide, I talk oes and Amaranth which are both here, if they really push the point and dont like the idea of our Landmarks, I just direct the to LeDroit Humane....

I really didnt know about UGLE & OES, I wonder if our OES has the same ritual....
