We laid a cornerstone at the new elementary school sometime last year. Like it was mentioned, not many people are aware it's done anymore and it was a huge hassle because the then superintendent didn't want us to have a stone on his building.
Fun times though, I enjoyed the ceremony.
I hate to say it, but I would have a difficult time with this if it happened here in Texas.
Granted, there's nothing going on remotely esoteric in most lodges I've attended, but an edict like this more or less assures Freemasonry won't be anything but a 'good ol' boys club' while it's in affect.
I recently attended an EA in a nearby lodge that I hadn't visited before. They had a dry-erase board in the east with the candidate's name on it...if you can't remember his name, look east. Problem solved. :)
I think the point is that fundraisers generally consist of a small amount of brethren doing a lot of work just to turn around and donate the money back to the community or give to charity.
I also agree that the state of our building shouldn't be a financial burden on the community. If...
I just asked the secretary since he handles the PayPal and he thinks it's only a dollar or two. Which sounds right as I don't recall ever hearing it was a huge amount.
Honestly I think most lodges don't use it because most lodges consist of older members who aren't tech savvy. Even if someone...
I say it's mostly society's fault but laziness plays a role as well. When I go to church and people I've known most of my life look at my suit and ask if I'm supposed to preach, I blame society. When people say suits are too much trouble or say they can't afford one (they can) then I blame...
Thanks brother, I'm always eager to learn more about how I should do things if/when I go to the East.
If feel a bit dumb for asking, but could you elaborate with what you mean about accountability? I agree that it needs to be present but I'm not sure how it could really be expected since our...
Brother Lins, couldn't the lodge vote to raise the endowment price along with yearly dues? I think it's believed among a lot of brothers that dues need to go up but I think endowments should appear less attractive as well.
$300 bucks a year sounds like a lot but if you do the math it comes down to just $25 bucks a month. I know people that spend more money than that each month just for cable. I'd argue that it's affordable enough for most people.
I say this knowing that I sure couldn't afford it right now...but...
Hello brethren,
I've been working on memorizing the opening and closing charges as they are in the Texas monitor. The monitor states that the charges are not mandatory and completely optional (which explains why I haven't ever heard them before) but some of the wording, along with the...
I actually think this was a good idea, even though it -shouldn't- be necessary.
We have hundreds of Masons as friends on our lodge's Facebook and I see them posting things that really make me wonder quite often.
Our lodge couldn't operate with our current dues structure if we didn't hold several fund raisers per year. This is the case for many of the lodges I've visited in my area.
