It's tough to explain to those who are looking for something sinister that the reason so many Masons were in positions of authority is because back then if you were a prominent man, you became a Freemason. By default, if something big was happening, many of those involved were Masons.

This seems funny to us here in the States, but it gets deadly serious in Great Britain. Every time there are problems in government, there seems to be another "look over there! Freemasons! They're nefarious and they're everywhere!" story in the press. They use Freemasonry as a whipping boy, particularly in England, but Scotland has some problems with it as well.

That's a pretty nefarious group of people they decided to list as known Freemasons, hahaha! Though I will add that I'm not as informed on British political scandals as I am on American.

No, they discontinued that after the European Court of Human Rights ruled, in a case not related to law enforcement, that Freemasonry was not a secret society, and that people had a right of free association without having to disclose it, and Jack Straw realized that they'd lose the case if it was litigated. However, every now and again some government official pushes it again.
