I have been visiting a lodge for six months. I only know one mason that has signed my petition. Why must two masons sign my petition?

A few but no one is i guess you say at that point with me yet. Im just getting nervous cause i went to different lodges for three years before i found this one and felt comfortable enough to ask for a petition.

If you really want it, you have to have the confidence to ask...ask...ask

You were in no hurry to approach Masonry but now that you have your time scale for Masonry approaching you is faster. Just offering a perspective.

Some lodges you can go to them and if you ask for a petition you'll suddenly see the points of a lot of pens. It's like everyone pointed a dart at you. Other lodges are in no hurry for one reason or another. Six months seems long, though. It's not like Virginia is a region where men put their lives at risk to become brothers. Ask when and why the delay.

All that I know of do. Spend some time with the Brethren, you'll find your signers.

Under the GLoTX law you must have 5- 2 of whom must be members of the Lodge being petitioned. The other 3 must be Masons in either the GLoTX or another GL in amity with GLoTX.

Mine did not. It was preferred that my signatories were Master Masons, but it was not required.

Each jurisdiction has its own rules so if you ask around long enough you'll find some jurisdiction where the answer is no. What matters for you is the rules for your jurisdiction plus the perspective that it's different jurisdiction to jurisdiction so you don't get locked in "That's how we do it therefore that's how everyone does it" later on.

California answer - Two signers need to be MMs who are members of the lodge you are petitioning. Two additional signers are character references who are not even required to be Masons.

Speaking from my experience, one does when petitioning.

I knew one member of the lodge I petitioned at and quickly became friends with other masons within a period of one month by attending their summer events. The masons signed my friends petitions quickly also after meeting them just a few times. I get voted on next Wednesday along with 3 of my other friends. So nerve wrecking.

The references are those who can "vouch" for your character and so forth. In the event, you don't know enough, logically I would say just keep attending when you can and getting to know the members. At some point, surely some members will be comfortable enough around you and know you well enough that they themselves would be able to vouch for you. Thus is how many masons who don't know other masons gain membership. Keep attending, do not be discouraged. These men will eventually be called your brothers. Taking time to make friends now will pay off in the long run anyway, just make require some patience. You'll get there!
