Some time back, in a post I made, I stated that the Tiler is elected in both lodges that I belong to. It seems that I have made a mistake. We are having out Officer elections in my Mother Lodge this next Tuesday (June 3), and and the current WM and I got into a discussion about who is elected and who is appointed, because we are having a PDDGM from another lodge conduct our election for us, and we didn't want to elect someone who should be appointed or appoint someone who should be elected. Now, to the point, I checked our Lodge By-Laws, and it seems that the Tiler is an appointed office in my Mother Lodge. I apologize for making an erroneous statement earlier.

In Arkansas, the Master, both Wardens, Treasurer, and Secretary are the elected officers. Under our lodge by-laws, the Deacons are also designated as elected officers, and the "line" starts with the Junior Deacon. Two Masters of Ceremonies, the Chaplain, Tyler, and a Director of Work are appointed by the incoming Master to serve during his year.

In Scottish lodges all 'Office-bearers' (The term 'Officer' is not used) are elected, including the Tyler, but excepting the Depute Master, Substitute Master and the Immediate Past Master. The latter holds his Office 'by right'; the Depute and Substitute Master are appointed by the incoming Master. Although both sit with him in the East they need not be Past Masters.

    Appointed in Florida

"The Subordinate Officers are the Senior Deacon, Junior Deacon, Senior and Junior Stewards, and Tyler, who are appointed by the Worshipful Master, but the Senior Warden has the nomination of the Junior Deacon; and the Worshipful Master may also appoint a Chaplain and a Marshal."

In UGLE, the appointment of Tyler is depends on different lodges. The BoC stated that Lodges can decide whether they elect or directly appointed by the Master. Usually it states in the Lodge by-laws.
Normally lodges invite the outgoing IPM as Tyler for the year in here.
Only the Master, Treasurer and Tyler(depends on lodges) are elected. The Master is elected then installed to the Chair. The Treasurer and Tyler are elected then appointed by the Master in the Installation.
So it's both "Elected" and "Appointed".

It's an appointed position in Idaho. Interestingly enough, the Tiler can be any Master Mason from Idaho to be a Tiler in any Idaho Lodge; they don't have to be a member of that particular Lodge.

The same here. When I first joined the Craft 26 years ago there was an elderly brother who had served as Tyler for lodges under both jurisdictions here for many years.

No, We have Tiler or outerguard who stands outside the lodge and an inner guard who stands inside the lodge. We do also have Jr. and Sr. Deacons who's task is to relay messages and the like.
